In mid-June 2010, many workers from the packing department come to Chinese Staff & Workers Association after a worker faints because the factory has all of the windows closed and does not provide water. CSWA helps the workers draft a petition and introduces them to the United Steel Workers Union.
In the beginning of August 2010, Pactiv headquarters sends a lot of people to the Kearny plant to make promises and threaten workers.
On September 16, 2010, there is a union election and the union loses.
Around November 2010, Pactiv Corporation is acquired by Reynolds Group.
Despite its promises, around February 2011, the company starts to increase the workload. Some workers start to complain. In response, Pactiv headquarters sends in people to further increase the workload, institute a lot of rules and give disciplinary warnings to the workers who spoke out.
In May 2011, Pactiv institutes an evaluation system that they never did before and intentionally gives those who were outspoken, lower scores.
On July 15, 2011, Pactiv lays off 41 packers who were the most outspoken and were pro-union.
In September 2011, Pactiv increases the work hours, institute mandatory overtime and speed ups in order to catch up on the production. Quite a few workers get injured as a result.
In June 2012, in response to the workers’ complaints, CSWA and workers hold a demonstration in front of the factory. For the first time, they demand an end to the mandatory overtime and reinstatement of workers who were laid off. The workers and students launch a boycott of all products made by Reynolds Group, the parent company that owns Pactiv Corporation.
From September until October 2012, many workers are forced to work a lot of overtime. Some of the workers start to speak out and some of the workers get warnings for refusing to work overtime.
On October 28, 2012, Hurricane Sandy hits the area. Pactiv shuts down the production located at the Kearny plant.
In mid-December 2012, Pactiv calls back about 10 packers (7 packers and 3-4 general helpers who become packers) to the warehouse to do the packing work. The other approximately 24 packers are laid off as well as 12 general helpers.
In January 2013, the workers who were laid off in July 2011 or after Hurricane Sandy go to the plant or to the warehouse to ask for reinstatement.
In the end of January 2013, the company hires a lot of temporary workers.
On about October 30, 2013, they lay off the remaining original packers.
